According to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, 70% of all cardiac arrests occur at home. The use of CPR and early defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator, can more than double a victim’s chance of survival. For every minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation, the chances of survival decrease by 7-10%. This is why FIRSTAED has been created, to increase the chance of survival by bringing community first responders and trained bystanders together in the event of an emergency.

FirstAED AND BERRN Consulting Ltd. want to increase the number of survivors of cardiac arrest. FirstAED is a system that allows a dispatch centre to send a text message to the nearest registered community first responders and CPR-trained by standers to ask for their help at an emergency in their location. Bringing together Community First Responder, CPR-trained bystanders as well as local EMS can increase the chance of survival drastically.

FirstAED Canada brings nearby, registered, trained, community first responders and qualified bystanders together faster than ever. In an area with a long wait time for EMS services to arrive, a dispatch centre will use FirstAED to alert the nearest registered community first responders and trained bystanders to ask them for their assistance in an emergency in addition to the EMS service that has been dispatched. FirstAED allows for help to arrive sooner, to assist a victim before EMS is able to reach the emergency, this can drastically increase the survival rates of sudden cardiac arrest. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, 1 in 8 survive if qualified first aid is given while only 1 in 30 survives if no first aid is given.

With the project, Canadian citizens can support the citizens’ efforts and initiatives and help increase the survival rate of cardiac arrest in their own homes, as well as the overall survival rate at cardiac arrest in Canada as well.
